From first drawing to number eight

LAVAN under way from slightly forward of her beam, showing the stepped superstructure

Custom Line unveils the Navetta 30, developed by Ferretti Group’s Strategic Product Committee under Piero Ferrari. The design is built around a new hull, its bottom lines carried further forward to make room for larger interiors and to burn less fuel. Filippo Salvetti draws the exterior and Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel the interiors, a pairing Custom Line had not used before.

At the World Yachts Trophies the Navetta 30 is named Best Layout in its class.

The eighth Navetta 30 leaves the yard as CHECKMATE. She has since been renamed LAVAN.

Who drew her

Antonio Citterio and Patricia Viel are better known ashore for Bulgari’s hotels and for the furniture Citterio designs for B&B Italia and Flexform. On the Navetta 30 their studio treated the yacht as architecture first. Every built-in piece was drawn to measure and made by hand, and volumes and finishes were modelled against the curve of the hull before anything was built. The nautical references stayed, but quietly: rounded corners on doors and openings, deep wooden reveals around the windows, round portholes set into the larger panes of the hull glazing.

LAVAN's main saloon, with a curved cream sofa, walnut floor and the dining table beyond

On LAVAN the main deck is floored in American walnut, under ivory lacquered walls and a [champagne-toned] ceiling. The rest of the palette keeps to stone and pale fabric: a white marble dining table on a walnut base, dark veined marble in the [owner's] bathroom, cream upholstery in the saloon. Electric curtains and dimmable lighting let each room close down for the evening or open to the sea.

Outside, the architect Filippo Salvetti kept her profile long and level. The upper superstructure is narrower than the main deck and stops further aft, which takes visual weight off a yacht of this volume. A raised joint leaves a fine line of shadow between hull and superstructure. Wide glazing runs along each deck, and automatic glass doors lead from the saloon and the upper lounge straight onto their terraces.

The main deck runs the full width of the hull, with no side decks to narrow it.

Owner, guests and crew

The owner's bed, with blue cushions, walnut furniture and a sea view.

The owner

The suite is forward on the main deck and takes the whole beam, a full deck away from the guest cabins below. It has [a walk-in wardrobe] and a bathroom with two basins and a window in the hull side.

The shaded aft lounge, with cream seating overlooking the sea.

The guests

Four cabins on the lower deck, each with its own bathroom: two doubles and two twins. The starboard twin’s beds join into a king, and the port twin has a pullman berth for an eleventh guest. By day there is the saloon with its dining table for ten, the upper-deck lounge and terrace with a wet bar and grill, the teak sundeck, and a shaded dinette on the bow.

LAVAN's stern swim platform, with a Williams tender alongside at sunset.

The garage

The garage door folds down into a swim platform with a shower. Inside, a Williams 435 TurboJet tender sits beside a jet ski, launched and recovered by a lift in the garage ceiling.

The crew

Five crew live in their own quarters [forward] on the lower deck: a captain's cabin and two twins. The wheelhouse heads the upper deck, with wing stations either side, and a second station in the cockpit for berthing stern-to.

Deck plan

The Navetta 30 was offered with dining on either the main or the upper deck. LAVAN has hers on the main deck, which leaves the upper deck free for a lounge and terrace.

Power goes to the water through conventional shafts, and the hull is a semi-displacement form. On acceptance trials she reached 15 knots and cruised at 13, with a range of 850 nautical miles at that speed and 2,000 at ten knots. Ferretti mapped the model’s noise sources before designing its insulation, and the accommodation sits on floating floors.

Two Kohler generators supply power on board, Hamann systems treat black and grey water, and hydraulic thrusters at bow and stern help in tight berths. A frequency converter lets her take [60 Hz] shore power in the Caribbean and the United States.

The 24-metre line

She is 28.43 metres overall, but her hull measures 23.98. [That keeps her load line length under 24 metres. Under her flag she is treated as a small yacht, with lighter rules for crew qualifications and charter coding than a yacht of her volume would usually face.]

A crew of five runs her: [a captain, an engineer, a chef and two stewards], [all open to staying on]. She is registered in [Jersey] under the [British] flag, [VAT not paid], and [is kept for private use / is commercially registered and charters at €X a week]. Running costs come to around [€X a year, excluding crew salaries and berthing]. [Since delivery she has been serviced by …, and a recent condition survey is available.]
